TELFER CASE COMPETITION JOURNEY
TELFER CASE COMPETITION JOURNEY
My Case Competition Journey!
Beginning my first year during the COVID-19 pandemic, I was looking for ways to connect with other students while being stuck at home. I came across the @telfercompetitions Instagram page that led me to registering for the Telfer Internal Case Competition. We had 24 hours to develop a marketing solution for a commercial real estate company in Ottawa. I was hooked!
JDC 2021 was my first interuniversity case competition. With my experience in triathlon, I was intrigued by the opportunity to compete in a virtual bike race against other students. As a first year, I suited up on Zwift to take on other cyclists in a multi-stage cycling race - online! The JDC community was so welcoming and I knew I would be back for future competitions.
Entrepreneurship Case
Sports - Zwift
I was back for my second JDC in a row, where I was a Participation delegate and sports substitute. A last-second switch to a virtual competition meant that I was again pulling from my triathlon experience to compete in an online 3km running race.
Participation/Sports - Endurance
Participation/Sports - Futsal
My first in-person case competition (and possibly my favourite)! The energy was unreal. After two years of lockdown, every school brought their all. Telfer took home first place in Futsal. I made many life-long friends at this competition that I am forever grateful for.
Participation
I believe every business student must experience an in-person JDC once in their time at university. The passion and competitive spirit that 1,000 Canadian university students bring is next-level. Telfer brought home the Contribution Cup for our work supporting jack.org, a Canadian organization focused on developing mental health resources for Canadian youth.
Coordinator
Through my case competition experiences, I was hired by the Telfer Competitions Committee to be the first Omnium Financier coordinator in over 5 years. Our delegation attended the largest finance and accounting case competition in Eastern Canada and brought home two podiums, including a first-place finish in the Stock Market Simulation.
I was subsequently awarded Administrator of the Year at the RÉFAEC 2023 Gala for my leadership of Telfer’s OF delegation. Very proud moment!
President
From a nervous first-year competing in virtual competitions, I have now become the President of TCCT. Throughout the 2023-2024 academic year, I would lead an Executive team of 33 motivated Telfer students to organize case competition delegations for 6 external case competitions. I owe our committee’s success to the dedication and hard-work of the entire committee. Their efforts never went unnoticed!
Internal
Another year, another JDC. As TCCT President, I helped support the coordinators throughout the busy competition weekend. Telfer sports showed out as always with a Sports Cup win.
Internal
For the first time since before COVID, TCCT would be attending JDCC. Through a hectic recruitment and practice phase, the JDCC delegation performed exceptionally well. Telfer came home with multiple podiums and plenty of experience to bring to next year’s edition.
Surprise Case
Despite participating in case competitions for 4 years, OF 2024 would be my first time competing in an Academic case. With my teammates Teya and Sam, we took on the Surprise case by developing an international expansion strategy for a liquor company based in Québec. Many long hours, countless revisions, and plenty of Redbull culminated in a 3rd place finish. Pretty good for our first academic cases!
Quiz
Following suit from OF, I decided to take on a new academic case at HM - Quiz. Teya, Damaris, and I had a few months to study hundreds of company logos, slogans, jingles, and other marketing content before we faced off against other schools in head-to-head competition. This was certainly the most unique competition experience I had. Despite not making it to the final rounds, we were proud of how hard we competed.
Even without any late-round success from the Quiz team, Telfer went “back-to-back”; placing 1st in the Surprise case and 3rd Overall for the second year in a row! The crowd was electric. This marked the end to an amazing competition season.
Interactive Case
My final JDC. This year I will be competing in the Interactive case, where my team and I will have 24 hours to create a compelling business solution for an unknown company. I will update this page to let you know how it went!
Organizing Committee - VP Sport
In my final year of studies, I decided to take my case competition experience to the next level by joining the organizing committee for Omnium Financier 2025, hosted at McGill University. As VP Sport, I would be introducing the sport component to OF for the first time ever through a Spikeball tournament hosted for delegates. At the time of writing, the competition is a few months away. However, I will be sure to update you on our (hopefully) future success!
OUH AH OTTAWA!
I owe so much to the Telfer competitions community. Through case competitions, I have made lifelong friendships, countless professional connections, landed internships and jobs, and made the most of my time at the University of Ottawa. Hopefully, through my journey, I have made you consider competing. I’m sure you won’t regret it!
